The first quarter of 2023 saw many huge films releasing at the box office. From ‘Pathaan’ to ‘Bholaa’, and the multi-starrer ‘Selfiee’ to the female-centric ‘Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway’ the cash registers kept ringing because of a few money-spinners. Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham-starrer ‘Pathaan’, released in January emerged as the clear winner of all as it collected Rs 520 crore nett (Hindi) in India. All hopes were pinned on ‘Shehzada’ and ‘Selfiee’ but the two only managed Rs 30 crore and Rs 20 crore respectively at the domestic box office. Thanks to Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’, the quarterly collection of the Hindi film industry improved by Rs 100 crore. Despite being a small film, ‘Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway’ too did not disappoint and added another Rs 20 crore nett to the kitty. Kapil Sharma-starrer ‘Zwigato’ though could not deliver well and collected only Rs 1.50 crore. ‘Bholaa’ though was the last release of the quarter, it is still running in theatres and may close at around Rs 80 crore. A few other films contributed in their own way and the final nett domestic box office figure for the first quarter touched Rs 813 crore.
