If you haven’t heard their music yet, you are missing out! Vivian Fernandes aka Divine & Nawed Shaikh aka Naezey are rappers who were born in the Mumbai slums. However they didn’t let that stop them from pursuing their passion of music.
The duo’s first track, Mere Gully, is a foot-tapping number and the music video tours you around the India they grew up in.
Divine became popular when his first single Yeh Mera Bombay (This is My Bombay), an ode to the diversity of the city and a poke at the increasing gap between the rich and the poor, went viral in 2013. Divine is proud of his upbringing, his background, and till date spells out his area-code “Five-Nine” (Mumbai 59) at the beginning of every song of his. He hopes his music expresses the wants, desires, and realities of the people he is surrounded by.
Naezy wishes that his music will bring about a positive change in his area and hopes that younger generations will not have to witness public murders, domestic violence and substance abuse like his generation did growing up in Mumbai 70.
Their journey is an inspiring one, and I can bet they will only achieve more success in the future. Stay tuned for an exclusive interview with the rapping sensations this Saturday at 10am!
