With the release of the new Marvel anthem, poet, lyricist, singer and music critic Nirmika Singh has added working with music composer extraordinaire AR Rahman to her list of achievements.
Entrusted to compose an anthem for Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, Rahman brought on board Nirmika, whose comfort and dexterity in Hindi has caught the ears of many in the industry, as has her poetry project #AurSuno, that combines spoken word and music.
The song has been composed and sung by AR Rahman, with lyrics by Nirmika Singh. The rap portion has been penned by MC Heam. Apart from the Hindi anthem, the Marvel anthem will also be released in Tamil and Telugu versions.
Speaking about his decision to work with Nirmika, Rahman says, “Working with legends of lyrics is fantastic but I also wanted someone who could write from a younger perspective. A lyricist who understands modern sensibilities and is also well-versed in the world of poetry and songwriting without letting go of the old soul of Hindi and Urdu poetry – I think Nirmika does all this with ease!” He adds, “We have already worked on three challenging pieces and I am looking forward to more.”
Says Nirmika of her debut film project with the Oscar-winning composer, “Working with Rahman sir is a dream come true! I couldn’t have asked for a better collaboration and I am grateful to him for this opportunity. It was an inspiring experience jamming in the studio with him. Rahman sir is a visionary who gives his co-creators all the freedom they need, making the musical partnership a creative collaboration in the truest sense.”
“With the Marvel anthem, we wanted to create a song that celebrates the human values of freedom and determination, and we’re very happy that we have a beautiful song now. The hook line ‘roke na rukenge’ encapsulates the overall mood of the anthem,” she adds.
The song was released on April 1 at a special event in Mumbai with Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo, who specially flew down to Mumbai to release the anthem.
The finale of the Avengers series of movies hits theaters on April 26.
